May 16th, 2026 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm, Hyde Community Center, 90 Lincoln St, Newton Highlands
This community workshop offers a practical introduction to self-defense through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), led by local instructor Daniel Mola, founder of ATOM Jiu-Jitsu & Science in Newton.
With over 30 years of experience in Jiu-Jitsu and a background in Physical Education, Physiology, and Biomechanics, Daniel brings a thoughtful and structured approach to teaching—focused on helping everyday people feel safer, more confident, and more aware.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a form of self-defense that emphasizes technique, positioning, and understanding how the body moves. Rather than relying on strength or athleticism, it uses concepts like balance, leverage, and timing to help individuals protect themselves effectively.
At ATOM Jiu-Jitsu & Science, the focus is on learning how and why things work—not just memorizing moves. This workshop will give participants a hands-on introduction to these ideas in a supportive, beginner-friendly environment.
Just as importantly, self-defense is not only about physical techniques. A large part of staying safe comes from awareness, decision-making, and avoiding risky situations whenever possible. This workshop will touch on those elements as well, helping participants think about self-defense in a broader, more practical way.
Workshop Structure:
We will begin with a light warm-up and gradually introduce movements specific to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. From there, participants will learn a small number of simple, effective techniques, building step by step in a way that is easy to follow.
While Jiu-Jitsu is especially known for its effectiveness on the ground, this workshop will focus primarily on standing situations—where most real-life interactions begin—due to space and surface considerations. Emphasis will be placed on managing distance, staying balanced, and responding safely in the early moments of an encounter.
This workshop is open to all experience levels. Whether you’re completely new or simply curious, the goal is to provide useful tools, build confidence, and create a positive introduction to self-defense for the Newton community.
